The following is an official release from RPI's SID

MEN?S HOCKEY DEFEATS MERCYHURST, 4-3
Engineers score three in first and hold on for the win

The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men?s hockey team got three goals in a span of 3:32 midway through the first period and held off the Mercyhurst Lakers, 4-3, this evening in front of 3,351 fans at the Houston Field House in Troy, NY. RPI improves to 3-4-0 with the win while Mercyhurst falls to 5-4-1 on the season.

The Lakers jumped out to a quick lead when freshman David Wrigley broke in alone on RPI netminder Nathan Marsters and slide a backhander into the net. The Engineers fought back for three goals in a span of 3:32 midway through the first period to take a 3-1 lead. Junior Carson Butterwick got the home team on the board when he finished on a well-executed power play. Danny Eberly earned the primary assist while Nolan Graham tallied the secondary helper. Eberly put the Engineers in front 2:18 later when he scored on a wrist shot from between the circles. Senior Chris Migliore capped the first period scoring with a shot through traffic that eluded the Mercyhurst goaltender.

The second period was scoreless until Mercyhurst?s Mike Carter banged in a rebound of a Louis Goulet shot at the 14:55 mark. Rensselaer re-gained its two-goal lead at 19:23 when Graham, who was set up on the right side of the goal, tallied on a rebound of a Marc Cavosie shot. Senior Jim Vickers also earned an assist on the goal, Graham?s fifth of the season.

The Lakers pulled to within one goal, 4-3, with 50 seconds remaining in the third period but could not get the equalizer. Mercyhurst?s third goal was the first of the season for Marty Rychley, who scored from the bottom of the right face-off circle.

Marsters finished with 19 saves for the win while Peter Aubry stopped 17 shots for Mercyhurst.

RPI returns to the ice next Saturday, November 24, when they?ll host Iona at the Houston Field House at 7pm. The Lakers are back in action on Friday, November 23, against Niagara in the Syracuse Invitational (7pm).
