PROVIDENCE HOCKEY DEFEATED BY NORTHEASTERN, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Northeastern Huskies earned a 3-1 HOCKEY EAST
victory over Providence College on Friday, November 9 at PC's Schneider Arena.
In the first period, neither team was able to crack the scoreboard, though
PC outshot Northeastern, 14-11, and had two power plays to the Huskies none.
Northeastern opened a 2-0 lead in the second period when Eric Ortlip and
Mike Ryan scored for the NU. Ortlip scored at the 3:35 mark on the power
play, redirecting a pass past PC goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass,
Sask.). Ryan scored at the 11:46 mark, putting Northeastern up by two goals.
Providence's Doug Wright (Kamsack, Sask.) pulled the Friars to within one
goal at the 13:01 mark when he beat NU's Jason Braun with a wrist shot on
the power play.
The only scoring in the final period was an empty net goal by Northeastern,
scored by Chris Lynch with 13 seconds remaining in regulation. Schaefer and
the Friars fought off a five-on-three power play advantage for Northeastern
in the period, with Schaefer making a total of 16 third-period saves.
Schaefer made a career-high 44 saves in the contest, surpassing his old
record of 42 he set last year against Boston College on March 17 at
FleetCenter in the HOCKEY EAST Championship game. Braun stopped 33 shots for
Northeastern.
The two teams return to action on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at NU's Matthews
Arena when they play each other for the second time this season.
