PROVIDENCE COLLEGE HOCKEY NOTES
(1-2-0 OVERALL/0-0-0 HOCKEY EAST)
LAST WEEK: The Friars hosted Sacred Heart University in PC’s home opener
and defeated the MAAC school, 8-1. Providence sophomore Jonathan Goodwin
and freshman Chris Chaput each scored twice in the victory. Peter Fregoe
scored his third goal of the season that evened the contest at 1-1 at the
3:30 mark in the first period.  Doug Wright scored what would become the
game winner at 9:50 in the first period and then Goodwin scored his first
of two and senior Drew Omicioli roofed a shot with 19:54 expired to put PC
ahead, 4-1. Goodwin scored his second goal in the second period and he
assisted on Mike Lucci’s first goal of the year five minutes later and
Providence led 6-1 after two periods. The third period belonged to
Providence freshman Chris Chaput. The rookie from Pawtucket scored twice,
for his first two scores of the season. Nolan Schaefer recorded 22 saves in
the contest for the Friars.

FRIARS IN HOME OPENERS: On Friday, October 19, Providence hosted Sacred
Heart in the team’s home opener. The Friars won the contest, 8-1, improving
their all-time mark in home openers to 30-21. The Friars are 17-12 in home
openers at Schneider Arena.

GOODWIN, CHAPUT TALLY TWO GOALS IN PC’S HOME-OPENER: Sophomore Jonathan
Goodwin and freshman Chris Chaput each scored two in Friday, October 19th’s
8-1 Providence victory over Sacred Heart. Both pairs of goals were the
first scores of the season for each player. On the evening, Goodwin
totalled three points with an assist in addition to the goals. Chaput
scored for the first time in his collegiate career. In addition to these
two, the Friars also got goals from Peter Fregoe (PP), Doug Wright, Drew
Omicioli and Mike Lucci.

FRIARS IN THE NATIONAL POLLS: Providence College was ranked 15th in the
nation in the USA TODAY/American Hockey Magazine's Poll, release Monday,
October 15. The Friars were ranked 12th in the nation in the U.S. College
Hockey Online poll, also release Monday, October 15.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Through three games, the Friars on the power play are
two-for 18 (0.111). The Providence penalty killing unit has foiled 17-of-21
(0.810) man-advantages for their opponents.

PROVIDENCE-UMASS LOWELL SERIES: The Friars and River Hawks have met a total
of 60 times with PC leading the all-time series, 33-26-6. The Friars have
won the last five meetings and nine of the last 12 meetings. At Tsongas
Arena, the Friars are 4-0-1. Before Tsongas Arena was built, Lowell played
in Tully Forum, where PC leads 13-7-5.

PROVIDENCE-UMASS AMHERST SERIES: The Friars and Minutemen have met a total
of 28 times with Providence holding a 18-9-1 series lead. PC has won
two-straight meetings but UMass won five-straight contest from Feb. 27,
1999 through Dec. 8, 2000. At Schneider Arena Providence leads 11-4-0,
while at the Mullins Center UMass has the advantage, 5-4-1.

FRIARS HISTORY IN THE HOCKEY EAST: The Friars have an all-time record of
179-207-44 in HOCKEY EAST league competition. Last year the Friars had
their best record in HOCKEY EAST play since the inaugural 1984-85 season
when PC went 15-14-5 and won the HOCKEY EAST Championship. Last year, PC
went 13-8-3 and finished tied for second in the regular season –
Providence’s highest finish in league play ever.
