No. 12 Providence Defeats Sacred Heart In Men's Hockey Action, 8-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The 12th-ranked Providence College Friars defeated
Sacred Heart, 8-1, in men's college hockey action at PC's Schneider Arena
on Friday, October 19. With the win, the Friars improved to 30-21 all-time
in home openers.
The Pioneers opened the scoring as they converted on a power-play
opportunity just 1:51 into the game. Konn Hawkes rifled a low shot from
10 feet in front of the net that beat PC netminder Nolan Schaefer through
the five hole after he had lost his stick. After surrendering a quick
goal, the Friars took advantage of their first power play to tie the game
when Peter Fregoe wristed in a shot past Sacred Heart goaltender Eddy Ferhl
at the 3:30 mark. The Friars registered three more goals in the period as
Doug Wright (9:50), Jonathan Goodwin (18:25) and Drew Omicioli (19:54) all
scored to give PC a 4-1 lead after 20 minutes of action.
The Friars increased their lead in the second period on goals by Goodwin
and Michael Lucci. Goodwin redirected Stephen Wood's shot from the right
point past Ferhl at the 3:40 mark. Lucci notched his first goal of the
season when he wristed in a shot at 8:07.
Providence added two more goals in the third period as rookie Chris Chaput
netted the first two tallies of his collegiate career at 1:00 and 13:28.
PC's Schaefer registered 22 stops in his first win of the season. Ferhl
made 39 saves for the Pioneers.
Providence will return to action on Friday, October 26 at UMass-Lowell at
7:00 p.m.
