St. Cloud State Gains National Team of the Week Honors
St. Cloud, Minn. -- #4 St. Cloud State (27-8-1, 20-8-0 WCHA) University has
been named USATODAY.com's Division I men's hockey National Team of the Week
for games played on March 2-3. This marks the second time this season that
the Huskies have gained National Team of the Week honors.
SCSU gained the honor by virtue of its big weekend sweep over #5 ranked
Minnesota. On March 2, the Huskies charted a 6-1 win at Mariucci Arena as
Jon Cullen scored the first hat trick of his collegiate career against the
Gophers.
In the second game, SCSU posted a 5-2 win at home against the Gophers. Over
the weekend, senior goalie Scott Meyer was impressive with 73 saves in the
two games. SCSU was also 15-of-15 on the penalty kill against the swept
Minnesota, which still leads the nation in power play conversions. Of note,
Brandon Sampair broke the squad's assist record with three in the series,
which places his total now at 35 this season. The old mark of 33 dishes was
set by Jeff Saterdalen in 1989-90.
The Huskies will continue their season on March 9-11, with a best-of-three
series against Alaska-Anchorage in the WCHA first round playoffs. SCSU's
second place finish in the WCHA this year is best in team history since
joining the league in 1990-91. SCSU's 27 wins is also an all-time team
record, which dates back to 1930-31.
