In the late 70's the St. Lawrence coach wanted a more "aggressive" name
than "Larries" for the team. The "Fighting Saints" was unofficially
introduced as a trial balloon along with a new logo that was selected
from those submitted as part of a campus-wide contest. Since "Fighting
Saints" could be applied to any of the St. Lawrence athletic teams, and
since some individuals felt the name could be taken literally to be
encouraging fights, "Skating Saints" was eventually adopted as being a
suitable compromise which clearly identified which Saint team was the
focus of attention.
There was an interesting period of transition at
Appleton Arena as the cheers went from a mix of "Go Larries" to "Go
Saints". There still occurs, during a particularly tight situation,
the occasional heated voice shouting Go Larries!! I'm sure others
have also recognized the woman's voice. I'm also sure many share the
memories that the cheer evokes.
