(28Feb99) Midday Sunday the 5th place match of the Women's Canadian Nationals
at Varsity Arena found the McGill Martlets beating the X-Women of St. Francis
Xavier 5-2. It was an evenly played affair that McGill pulled out with timely
scores.

In the first, both teams looked tired. The X-Women put together some good
rushes and McGill took too many penalties. Xavier took the lead when Lesley
Mosier (Cindy Clarke) was left unguarded in the slot and she drilled her try
inside the near post. The Martlets tied the contest when Kathleen O'Reilly
(Julie Hornsby) was well marked, but got her shot off anyway.

In the middle frame, McGill gradually took control. Dana Rittmaster
(O'Reilly) buried her chance after a spell of pressure. Adrienne Saba made it
3-1 when her long range shot found net. The X-Women came back, while
shorthanded, when they produced a turnover and Mosier (Michelle Fortier)
converted. However, McGill stormed right back with a power play goal from
Rittmaster (Allison Ticmanis, Hornsby).

In the third, the X-Women moved the puck effectively, but the Martlets would
have none of it and got the only tally. Hornsby filched the puck and deked
her way past the defense and goalie. Nice goal.

Xavier was playing their third game in three days, but came through it looking
good. Obviously, skill development is a priority. Leanne MacDonald made some
timely intercepts today on the blue line. She has a good range of forward
passes. Gayle MacDonald continued her strong marking. She also laid on some
telling outlet passes.

McGill produced the goods today and so won the 5th place honors. They were a
tad chippy, which seemed unusual. Hornsby was the playmaking master. Her
striking qualities are top shelf. Clearly, with some more striking skills,
McGill will be a team to watch for in the near future.
