Local agents Ron Simon and Neil Sheehy negotiated salaries even the
National Hockey League players union figured were unattainable this week
when former Gophers and restricted free agents Craig Johnson and Darby
Hendrickson signed new contracts. Johnson, who was paid $375,000 by the
Los Angeles Kings last season, signed a two-year deal for $725,000 this
season and $825,000 the following season, plus performance bonuses.
Hendrickson, who was paid $400,000 by the Toronto Maple Leafs last
season, signed for $675,000 this season and $775,000. That's in U.S.
money, not Canadian.
 
Former hockey Gophers administrative assistant John Hamre of Roseville
is headed to Yale as an assistant.
 
The University of Minnesota men's athletic department, which won a
national award for its football marketing last season, has designed and
purchased a six-page advertising insert entitled ``Modern Rodent --
Danger on the Prairie'' in the Aug. 31 local edition of Sports
Illustrated's college football edition, which has a Minnesota
subscription of 80,000. The ad, which resembles a National Geographic
layout, discusses misrepresentation of the modern gopher, the school's
mascot.
 
If the Gophers receive their ticket tax back as part of a new Metrodome
lease, it would mean a savings of about $340,000 a year for the men's
athletic program.  The moeny would likely be used to pay off debt on
athletic buildings such as Mariucci Arena.
