Clarkson University has named Geoff Brown as Chair of
the Department of Physical Education, Intercollegiate
Athletics and Recreation. Brown has been associated with
Clarkson through four decades since arriving in Potsdam as
an undergraduate in the late 1960s. Brown, who received a
bachelor's degree in social sciences from Clarkson in 1972
and a master's degree in accounting in 1975, has been a
student-athlete, coach and an administrator at the University.

A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Brown will assume his duties
as Athletic Chair on September 8, 1997. He succeeds
long-time Clarkson Athletic Director Bill O'Flaherty, who
accepted the position of Director of Player Personal with the
Los Angeles Kings in early August.

"We are all very excited about Geoff's appointment as
Chair. He brings to the position a long history at Clarkson
and wealth of experience in a variety of areas that will be of
benefit to the Athletic Department," stated Michael E.
Cooper, Vice President of Student Affairs.

Brown has held numerous positions at Clarkson and most
recently served as the University's Executive Director for
Enrollment Planning, Transfer and International Admissions
and new Student Financial Assistance. From 1994 through
1996, he acted as Executive Director for Student Financial
Assistance, Enrollment Planning and International
Admissions.

Brown has also held various administrative positions in the
University's admissions and financial aid offices since starting
his employment at Clarkson in 1977.

As an undergraduate at Clarkson, Brown played three
years of hockey under coach Len Ceglarski from 1969-72.
Through 61 career games as a left wing, he scored 34 points
on 11 goals and 23 assists. Brown also competed in golf and
baseball at Clarkson.

From 1981 through 1989, Brown was Clarkson's junior
varsity hockey coach and also assisted the varsity. He also
served as Clarkson's representative to the Eastern College
Athletic Association (ECAC) Hockey Policy Committee from
1983-1993, acting as Co-chair during 1986 and 1987. He also
represented Clarkson on the Empire Athletic Association
(EAA) Senior Administrators Council concerning Division III
sports. Brown could also be heard on the airwaves as a radio
sports broadcaster for WPDM/WSNN Radio during Clarkson
hockey games.

Brown resides in Potsdam with his wife Marni and their
son Cameron.

Clarkson students can compete in 14 varsity sports at the
NCAA Division III level, while the men's hockey squad is a
national powerhouse in Division I. The ski teams participate in
the United States Collegiate Ski Association (USCSA).

Clarkson athletic teams have enjoyed great success
through the years. The University's hockey team has been a
perennial power in Division I, boasting the best winning
percentage in college hockey at .664. The Golden Knights
have won seven ECAC regular season championships,
including the league title in 1996-97. Clarkson, which has
graduated 31 hockey All-Americas, has participated in 16
NCAA Tournaments, including the past three seasons.

At the Division III level, Clarkson has sent numerous teams
to postseason play in recent years, including NCAA playoff
appearances by the men's soccer, women's basketball and
men's lacrosse squads.

The Golden Knights' Division III teams compete regionally
in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA), which
has produced numerous NCAA Champions and is comprised
of top quality private institutions from within New York State.
