Larry is exactly right.  If Ivy athletes (particularly good, valuable ones)
in got preferential treatment as everyone seems to believe they do, Duffus
- who was going into his junior year, and was pegged Cornell's starting
goalie for the coming two years - would have been given enough aid to keep
him in college.  As it was, he was given what Cornell determined to be a
fair package, and it simply wasn't enough.  That may have had something to
do with a varsity athlete's lack of time for part-time employment, or
perhaps the Duffuses had non-liquid assets that were being counted against
them - I really shouldn't speculate, because I don't know the individual
details.  But the end result was that Parris and his parents decided it
made more sense for him to leave.
 
There is a very big difference between saying "everybody with the same
demonstrated financial need is treated equally" and saying "everybody is
given exactly enough so that they can afford college."  I said the former;
I would never claim the latter.
 
Just two more months!!
