Ted Donato of the Boston Bruins scored twice as United
States held on to beat defending champions the Czech
Republic 4-3 and jump back into medal contention at the ice
hockey world championships on Monday.

Leading 4-1 entering the final period, the Americans
sat back and allowed the Czechs to strike two goals in the
opening three minutes, Vladimir Vujtek and Jiri Dopita
scoring 48 seconds apart.

Following the second goal, U.S. coach Jeff Jackson
immediately called a time-out to calm his troops. It seemed
to have the desired effect and the Americans were finally
able to celebrate a crucial win.

Although it was only the first game of the medal
round, it was a must win for the U.S., who were the only
one of six teams not to carry over any points from the
round-robin.

``This lets us back into the race,'' said Jackson.
``We needed this win to get back into the mix, now everyone
is so close.''

Boston Bruins defenceman Bob Beers had the only
goal of the first period, stabbing Donald Barshear's pass
past Roman Cechmanek to give the Americans the 1-0 lead.

In the second, Donato and Chris Marinucci put the
U.S. 3-0 up before Vujtek finally got the Czechs on the
scorebord.

Donato, collected his second of the period and what
proved to be the game winner, 56 seconds later, when he
blasted a slap shot between Cechmanek's pads to restore
the Americans' three-goal advantage.

Once again, the only source of a USA triumph is from our
brothers to the North. Go Deep.
