Having watched the 2nd ECAC Semi on Empire tonight, I have to comment about
the replay of the 3rd RPI goal. As Empire showed many replays, it became
apparent that the man lying in the crease had shoved the puck in with his
hand. As this was being determined, the announcers said something to the
effect that "obviously it was not a goal", and the office replay officials
would rule that way. At this point they mentioned the officials were Aminan
and Gallagher (two refs well known around the eastern rinks). My wife and I
looked at each other and started to chuckle. Almost immediatly after this,
the goal was counted. Now we started to laugh out loud. These two officials
have enough problems getting things right when they see it from 3 feet away,
now they just proved that they can miss calls with clear replays. Sigh.

Why do we have replays, if they can not get the calls right? I would not
have minded if the on-ice official had counted the goal, as it was a
bang-bang play and his view was not great (although he was where he should
have been and generally did a good job in the game). But even the anouncers
were amused when the goal was credited to a man standing behind the net when
the puck went in, and it was obvious that no one legally propelled the puck
into the net. Either get people on replay who can see, or give up the
system. The present situation is a joke. I would rather have an occasional
oops call as part of the game (like a bad bounce), than this farse.

Fortunatly the goal ended up being only a sidenote, so we can talk about the
problem rather than a mistake that cost a team a season.
