In a game which saw UND outshoot SCSU by a margin of 27 to 40 and have
twice as many powerplays, UND STILL manages to lose at home by a score of
5 to 2. So, what caused to Sioux to lose?? It appeared from the very
beginning that UND was basically playing uninspired hockey. SCSU
outhustled and outmuscled UND at virtaully every stage of the game.
SCSU scored the first two goals in the game mid-way through the
first period. The goals were only twenty or so seconds apart. After
this happened, UND played their best for the rest of the first period and
went on to even the score at 2 to 2. As the second period rolled around,
UND came out flat and seemed to virtually give up. The third goal of the
night for the Huskies also proved to be the last one that Kvalevog
faced. One of the SCSU players had a breakaway, and instead of skating part
of the way out to face the player, Toby continued to backup into the
net. He backed up so far, that the SCSU player could shoot anywhere at
the net and it would have been good. This lead to an irate Blais pulling
him and putting Aaron Vickar between the pipes. Vickar's confidence
seems to be low after the game at the University of Minnesota last
Saturday, becuase he allowed two goals in the second period while facing
very few shots (7 perhaps?). In the third Blais went with the freshman
Schweitzer, and he stopped the five shots that he faced.

Quick thoughts:

The game was very clean with only a few penalties called.

Brian Leitza played an outstanding game.

SCSU was without Matt Cullen. If he had played, who knows what the score
would have been.

UND's defense had its worst home game of the season. The first two SCSU
goals were giveaways, and the infamous third goal was, as I mentioned
before, a breakaway. Kvalevog did stop a couple of other breakaways
earlier in the game.

The two teams face-off tonight at 7:35.
