First thing is OSU's new uniforms which were supposedly flown in that day.
Brand new all black with flashy numbers on them, very impressive looking.
At first, I wondered why they would break in a new jersey on a road trip
against UM but then maybe it worked for them.
Second, Brendan Morrison sat out a second straight game. One rumour going
through our section was that his wrist was broken. I was able to walk next
to him during periods and though it's hard to see his wrist because he had a
sport coat on, it looks like some kind of a cast to me.
Third, thank god to Red Berenson, he started Greg Malicke in goal for UM.
Greg held OSU scoreless until midway through the third period. The first
goal against him was a great goal, odd angle, high upstairs. The second goal
was also a good one, so there were no cheap goals against Greg.
Fourth, UM had 52 shots on goal which sounds like a lot because it is a lot.
OSU had 24 shots on goal. Both teams scored 2 goals. This happens to UM
often. We outshoot the other team and lose or just win by a point or so. I
feel that Red needs to teach the players how to shoot better, what corners to
pick at what times, and so on. Our players seem to shoot directly at the
goalie, it's rare that you saw Askey last night have to jump or dive to make
any saves. This has been one of my theories for the past several years -
that UM has to outshoot the other teams by 50% or more to have a chance at
winning. We may shoot more often, but the other teams have better shooters.
Fifth, in the first period, UM was down by 2 men for 1:53 and held OSU off.
Very exciting moment(s) for the fans who showed their appreciation.
Sixth, on OSU's first goal, Askey (OSU goalie) skated out almost to the blue
line with his arms other his head. That part of the celebration I could
understand. Here's a team that hasn't scored a goal in almost 6 periods of
hockey, they are getting outplayed, and they score first late in the game.
So far I'm with Askey. Then when he turned around, he taunted the UM
student section. The fans went berserk the rest of the game against Askey.
I also feel the UM players on the bench saw it and said "what the heck is
that guy doing?" 15 seconds later UM scored, 2 minutes later they scored
again.
