CCHA CHAMPIONSHIP

DETROIT (AP) -- Freshman defenseman Ted Laviolette scored on a rebound with
5:29 left in the third period to lead Lake Superior State to a come-from-behind
5-3 victory over Michigan State on Sunday in the CCHA championship game.
The defending NCAA champions, who entered the tournament as the fourth seed,
have 16 victories and a tie in their last 18 games.
The CCHA title was the fourth in five years for Lake Superior, which has
played in seven straight championship games. The Lakers are 20-1 in CCHA playoff
games under coach Jeff Jackson.
Tournament MVP Wayne Strachan set up the winning goal when he carried the
puck into the Michigan State end and fired a shot off the goalpost. The rebound
bounced to Laviolette, whose slap shot beat Michigan State goalie Mike Buzak.
Mike Morin scored an empty-net goal for Lake Superior with 56 seconds
remaining.
Michigan State took a 3-2 lead at 7:52 of the third period. Chris Smith
intercepted a Lakers' pass and fed a long pass to Mike Watt, who faked a slap
shot and then put a wrist shot through the legs of goalie John Grahame.
Lake Superior pulled into a 3-3 tie when Brian Felsner jammed his own rebound
past Buzak at 12:10.
Lake Superior scored twice in less than four minutes late in the second
period to tie the game at 2-2. Jason Trzcinski took a cross-ice pass from Gerald
Tallaire and fired a wrist shot past Buzak at 13:08 to make it 2-1. Bates
Battaglia pulled the Lakers into a tie with 3:06 left in the period when he
flipped Strachan's rebound over a fallen Buzak.
Lake Superior turnovers helped Michigan State build a 2-0 lead. Grahame
attempted to clear the puck but Rem Murray intercepted and fed a centering pass
to Dean Sylvester, who scored from the slot at 6:06 of the first period.
Anson Carter scored his 33rd goal of the season for the Spartans at 1:45 of
the second period when he stole the puck from defenseman Keith Aldridge and
broke in alone on Grahame.
