COMMENTS:
UMass-Amherst came into this weekend looking for their first
HE points. Last week they were able to beat Notre Dame while
BC lost to Notre Dame at BC, so they figured to have a shot. But,
BC uses special teams to blow out UMA, setting a Hockey East
record with 3 short-handed goals, and adding 2 power play goals.
UMass-Amherst was unable to get the offense untracked until this
game was decided, scoring 3 late goals against Singewald.

First period: BC dominates the action, keeping most of the play
in the UMass zone. Haggerty gets the first short-handed goal to
continue UMass's year-long struggle with power plays. BC's 2nd
goal comes after the puck was cleared during a power play; Regan
wanders to the corner to retrieve his lost goalie stick while BC
goalie Greg Taylor passes up to the UMA blue line to O'Leary.
Regan rushes back into his net but is a bit unsettled, O'Leary
and another BC forward come into the zone with only 1 defenseman
covering. O'Leary fakes pass and shoots high to short side.
Haggerty gets his second goal of the period after about 4 pokes
at the puck in front of the net, Regan could not cover. (Haggerty
hits the post later in the period and gets several more good
chances in the game but does not get the hat trick.) Bonneau scores
late for UMA to provide some hope for the second period.

Second period: BC puts the game away with 5 unanswered goals,
including 2 more short-handed and 1 power play goal. Rob Canavan
opens the scoring with a nice backhand low to the short side. (He
has been moved up to the 2nd line and seems to be playing much
better.) BC forechecking gets the next short-handed goal as David
Hymovitz steals the puck in the corner and moves on net, then scores
to the near side as Regan starts to leave the post to cover the middle.
UMA takes a timeout after this goal and coach Mallen tries to get
some life in his team with an impassioned speech (or by screaming
his head off; it could have been either from my point of view.)
It works for a few minutes, but BC strikes again when Buckley makes
a nice feed to O'Leary on the right just as they reach the blue line,
and O'Leary slaps it through the five-hole. UMA replaces Regan with
Moriarty in goal at this point.

UMA gets another power play when Ashe takes a retaliatory elbowing
penalty (just what BC wanted - another SH situation! :-) ) Mike
McCarthy does a tremendous job of forechecking/penalty-killing, and
the puck finally squirts loose right in the center of the UMass zone,
BC's Krayer gets it all alone and scores the 3rd short-handed goal.
(In my opinion, McCarthy deserved an assist for this goal, as he did
all the work to create the opportunity. However, it goes down as
unassisted, I guess because the puck was not directly passed by
McCarthy.) UMA tries to get things going, but they were a little
frustrated at this point (i.e., O'Connell taking a minor and major
penalty.) During the power play BC gave away the puck during a
change of defense and Jon Jacques of UMA had a great breakaway
opportunity, but Taylor makes a stupendous glove save to stop him.
BC then gets their last goal, a close-in poke by Brian Callahan (ppg.)

Third period: Josh Singewald takes over in goal for BC, and BC kind
of relaxes this period, giving UMA more opportunities. Evans gets
the 2nd UMA goal with the first shot on Singewald, a sharp slapper
from the top right circle. UMA comes to life a bit and shows some
signs of recovery with 2 more goals. The UMA top line of Norris,
Jacques, and Bonneau is very good, and they are learning to play
together now that Jacques is eligible (transfer from BU).

This was a pretty lopsided game as it turned out, and a quiet one.
UMA got off to a bad start, got in the hole, and couldn't recover.
BC looked very confident and moved well (playing UMA, one should be
confident, right? Their record is not very good yet.) Listening to
some of the game on the UMass radio broadcast afterward (tapedelayed
due to BU broadcast), the announcers were "very impressed" with BC.
Then again, these same announcers stated that the BC rink was
"Olympic-sized, just like at the Mullins Center", when it clearly is
NOT. (I know, the press boxes are way, way up there at Conte Forum,
but how hard is it to tell the difference?) Oh, well, ....
See the next game report to see how things can change ....
