(You'll have to pardon me if my voice has no resonance, I have a very bad head
cold. Actually, it's a very good one, that's why I feel like s**t.)

I wanted to get this out before the conference games which are scheduled for
tonight. This is the update of the standings in the Contest as of games played
Sunday.

My deepest thanks to those out there (you know who you are) who update the
standings for the conferences here on Hockey Heaven and make my life a little
easier. Also my thanks to the individual who updates the archived composite
schedule (I won't mention his name, he probably gets too much fanfare here
anyway :-) and it probably goes to his head on occasion :-)) that made my tie-
breaker chore a bit easier.

Anyway, the current conference standings used in the point determination (I'll
discuss how ties in the standings were broken below):
                HE ECAC CCHA WCHA
1. Maine Brown Bowling Green Minnesota
2. Boston U. Clarkson Michigan St. Wisconsin
3. Northeastern Dartmouth Michigan Colorado Coll.
4. Mass-Lowell Harvard Miami Denver
5. New Hampshire RPI Illinois-Chi. North Dakota
6. Providence Vermont Ferris St. Michigan Tech
7. Boston C. Yale W. Michigan Minnesota-Dul.
8. Merrimack Union Lake Superior N. Michigan
9. Mass-Amherst Cornell Notre Dame St. Cloud St.
10. St. Lawrence Ohio St. Alaska-Anch.
11. Colgate
12. Princeton

Ties between teams with equal number of conference points were broken as
follows:
1. Teams have unequal number of wins- Team with higher number of wins ranked
   higher
2. Teams have equal number of wins- Team playing fewer games ranked higher
3. Teams have identical records- a. Head-to-Head
                                 b. Common Opponents
                                 c. Goal Differential

Three ties went to category 3 above. The UIC-Ferris tie in the CCHA was broken
by common opponents. Both have played ND twice, with UIC going 2-0-0, while
Ferris went 1-1-0.

The Clarkson-Dartmouth tie and Vermont-Yale ties were broken by Goal Differ-
ential, since the teams involved had no common opponents. Clarkson had a +11
GD vs. -7 for Dartmouth, while Vermont edged Yale with a +10 to -9 advantage.

Reminder that points are "disawarded" based on how far off your predictions
are. To give an example, probably the one which cost people more points than
any other, let's say you predicted Dartmouth to finish 12th (as many of us did)
in the ECAC. The current standings show that the slimy illegitimate children
:-) are currently in 3rd. That would cost you 9 points.

That having been said, the current leader is Bob Constantine, one of the New
Hampshire faithful, with a grand total of 78 points, which actually gives him
a fairly comfortable lead over his nearest competitors, Steve Kapetanakis and
Lance Harry, who both have 86. The overall standings, with points broken
down by conference:

                                        HE ECAC CCHA WCHA Total
1. Bob Constantine 4 38 18 18 78
2. Steve Kapetanakis 12 30 16 28 86
   Lance Harry 12 34 20 20 86
4. Ron Fraser 12 32 20 24 88

(You'll have to excuse me, the ranking numbers are a bit screwed up. From
position 36 on, the number should be one higher. There are 61 participants.)

For those behind, don't give up hope. I doubt seriously that Dartmouth will
finish 3rd in their conference or that LSSU will continue to flounder down in
8th place.

Next update should be the week before Christmas, with a third update around
February 1.

Look for other exciting pools in the New Year: the conference playoff pool in
March (all four conferences) and, of course, the NCAA Tournament pool in March
and April.
