Maine had its games won with Jeff Tory counted as losses. This
dropped them to about 17th in the RPI rating. The top 12 teams all
made the tourney.

The question about Maine having its losses to BU not counted is a moot
one - the games were played legitimately in the conference tourney and
Maine was legitimately seeded 8th. The games Maine actually played
are the ones which made up its record and determined how it stood in
the numerical factors.

In those factors, besides dropping to 17th in the rating, Maine did
not fare well anywhere else. Their record against teams considered,
for example, was about .310, and they were only .500 in their last 20
games. But I believe the rating was the key factor, as it dropped
them below several other teams who had even better chances of
receiving bids like CC.

While I believe Maine was a team considered, having the 3 wins over PC
changed to losses (their record dropping to 14-18-4) effectively ended
their chances; this was what Rick Comley said on the selection show -
and it was because they no longer stacked up favorably against the 12
teams that got in. It would have been interesting to see what would
have happened had the change not occurred, since it would have kept
Maine at least among the top 12...
