Terry May at Northern Arizona sent me this and okayed my sending it to
the list. NAU is a former NC$$ DivI team that was without hockey for
several years, but they reinstated it last season and are currently at
the club level. Thanks to Terry for the info and maybe some of you in
the Washington, DC area will get to see NAU when they make an East
Coast swing in January. - mike

I thought you might enjoy having a copy of out tentative schedule for
the coming year. We get on the ice this coming Saturday night for a
preliminary skate and will have tryouts throughout the week next week prior
to basically exhibition games with a local team on the 15th and 16th. We
have had many new people show up for preliminary meetings so are excited to
see who actually comes for tryouts - even more importantly, how they can
play. It seems silly, but we were pleased as 3 goalies showed up for the
first meeting. We are hopeful that we can now compete well with the
regular club teams; we'll find out soon.
The LA Kings were in Phoenix to play an exhibition with their farm
team - the Roadrunners. Gretzky, McEchren, and Sandstrom skated for the
Roadrunners on 1 line. The game was a sellout and the Roadrunners et al.
won 6-5 after a shootout. Gretzkys Roadrunner jersey is being auctioned
for charity! The IHL has done away with the 5-minute overtime period prior
to a shootout. It'll be interesting to see how that works. We also have
4 NHL games scheduled at the America West Arena this year - "The Desert
Series": Stars-Ducks on 11/9; Canadiens-Nordiques on 1/5; Flames-Kings on
1/24; and Blackhawks-Ducks on 3/8. Jerry Colangelo (of the Suns fame) who
basically runs the arena is committed to bringing baseball & hockey
ultimately to the Valley. I still think a winter college "Desert Classic
Tournament" would work; particularly if you had a midwestern team as there
are many Chicagoans, other midwesterners who have relocated here.
I'll try to keep you posted as the year develops! All the best - Terry
