In the snow in Schenectady, Union took a 9-2 non-league win over
Findlay of the CHA on Saturday night.
The score pretty much tells the story of this one. After coming back
to tie Union on Friday night, Findlay couldn't keep up with the
Dutchmen on Saturday night. Findlay opened the scoring midway through
the first, but Union scored the next 9. Niklas Mattsson scored his
first collegiate goal and Marc Neron and Kris Goodjohn had two apiece
for Union. Findlay was in penalty trouble all night, with Union
scoring on 3 of 10 power play chances. Findlay's Andy Croak and Dave
Erickson had trouble staying out of the box all night. Arnold Lee was
called for a trip on a play that sent Union's Matt Vagvolgyi off with
what looked like a knee or ankle injury. One scuffle came midway
through the third when Lee got into a little shoving match with a few
Union players, but fortunately it didn't escalate further.
Brandon Snee was back in net for Union, and played a solid game.
Forwards including Jeff Hutchins and Joel Beal spent some time at the
blue line. Union is apparently fighting the flu, and healthy
defensemen are in short supply. Charles Simard seemed to be on the
ice all the time. Jason Kean didn't play as much, but had a very
strong game after not playing on Friday.
Union finishes their non-league schedule at a solid 5-2-3. They are
9-7-4 overall. Next weekend starts the stretch of 6 straight ECAC
weekends with Dartmouth coming in to Achilles on Friday night,
followed by Vermont on Saturday.
