11/01/92 Providence at Vermont NC 2:00
Providence became the first team not to lose at Maine with their 3-3
tie Saturday night since 1/31/92 when BU earned a 4-4 tie. Maine did not
lose at home all of last year, going 18-0-1 (3 wins were at "homes away
from home" in Maine). Maine is 35-0-3 in its last 38 at home dating
back to a 12/7/90 loss to Lowell, 5-4.
In nonleague action, Merrimack split at Western Michigan, scoring four
goals in the third period of the first game to overcome a 4-1 deficit
and win, 5-4, and then dropping a 5-2 decision in the rematch. UNH's
Brett Abel came within 1:16 of shutting out Vermont in his first game
as the #1 goalie for the Wildcats, 4-1. BC opened up with a 6-2 win at
Army as Rob Canavan got a hat trick, and Lowell held on to beat Colgate,
3-2.
The only teams not in action were BU and Northeastern. All eight HE teams
play nonleague games this coming weekend against teams from the CCHA,
ECAC, DivII, and Canada, and BC plays at WCHA affiliate Alaska-Anchorage
which served notice that it may be just reloading and not rebuilding with
its sweep of Northern Michigan. This should be a good test for BC. HE
teams put up a 4-1-0 nonleague record in the first weekend of play.
Recaps of the Maine-Providence series have already been posted, and
I'll be doing one of the Merrimack-Western Michigan series too as we
returned from Kalamazoo today with the split. Here are boxes from two
of the other three games played this weekend involving Hockey East teams.
Lowell-Colgate was tonight and I have no box.
