Notes on the Sweden-United States game (from _USA Today_ and the _Post-
Standard_):
Sweden 4, United States 4
Sweden got on the board just 1:13 into the game, but Team USA held a
2-1 lead after the first, thanks to goals by Brian Mullen (assisted by
former Clarkson standout Dave Tretowicz) and Kevin Miller. After the
Swedes rebounded to go ahead 3-2 in the second (goals by Loob and
Bergqvist), Tony Amonte of BU fame tied it up with just one second left
in the middle period, slapping home a pass from Eric Weinrich. Amonte
then assisted Jeremy Roenick on a goal 7:35 into the third to give the
United States a 4-3 lead. With just over a minute left, Sweden pulled
its goalie, and then Team USA missed on an empty-net chance. Sweden's
Mats Sundin got control of the puck and beat US goalie John Vanbies-
brouck from in close for the game-tying score with 57 seconds left.
The Swedes outshot Team USA 42-28.
A few more notes on the earlier games, culled from a rec.sport.hockey
posting by Kimmo Kauranen, at the University of Tampere in Finland (some
good summaries -- hopefully, Kimmo will keep posting):
Canada 4, United States 3 (4/19)
Hobey Baker winner and former BC player David Emma assisted on Brian
Mullen's goal in the second for Team USA, which tied the game at 2-2.
Emma's former HEM linemate Shawn McEachern then tallied at 9:08 of the
third period. But Canada's Courtnall (sorry, don't know his first
name) scored twice in the next three minutes and put the game away.
Courtnall's game-winner was a short-handed goal.
Finland 4, Sweden 4 (4/20)
With Jari Kurri scoring twice and adding an assist, Finland held a 4-2
lead 46 seconds into the second period, and they kept that lead until
there was under a minute left in the game. Then Mats Sundin struck
twice, at 19:08 and at 19:23 (completing a hat trick in the process) to
give the Swedes the tie.
