In the first semifinal, the second-seeded Rhode Island Rams defeated the
third-seeded Delaware Blue Hens 4-3. Delaware took a 1-0 after a very slow
and sloppy first period, but the Rams came back, and the game was tied at
3 after two. Rhode Island scored the only goal of the third, as Delaware
could not capitalize on a late power-play opportunity.
Now, onto game two, which featured the first-seeded, undefeated, untied
Penn State Icers against the fourth-seeded Maryland Terrapins. Penn State
jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first, but Maryland scored midway
through the period to cut the lead to 2-1. The Icers would score less than
a minute later, but the Terps would answer on a breakaway goal a couple minutes
after that. Penn State closed out the scoring in the period, and took a 4-2
lead after one. But after that it was all Penn State, as the Icers scored four
in the second to take a 8-2 lead after two. But Coach Joe Battista, who
wanted the Icers to play with all the intensity that they'll need at Nationals,
sent his troops out fired up in the third, instead of letting them sit on their
6-goal lead. The Icers scored early in the third, and Maryland removed go
goaltender Brian Johnson in favor of Dave Schwab. Penn State kept up the
pressure, and, like the Energizer rabbit, kept going and going....when all
was said and done, Dave Murphy of the Icers had a hat trick, and Penn State
had obliterated Maryland 15-2. Penn State moves to 29-0-0 on the season.
John Gray picked up another win, before being replaced by Dennis Magulick
midway through the second period. The Icers will face Rhode Island at 3:30
today for the ACHL Championship.
