* Subject: Fight's a draw, but AFA takes series with Army
***********************************************

AF and army fought to a draw on all the judges' cards Sat. night.

In other action, the Falcons scored a 4-1 win over the Black Knights
to sweep their weekend hockey series before a crowd of 3,153 at the
Cadet Ice Arena.

It was the first sweep of the season for the Falcons, who improved to
6-15-2.

Army, which came into the series with a 5game unbeaten streak, left
with a 2game losing streak. they dropped to 12-8-1.

Air Force center Jeff Barlow scored the knockout punch. His
unassisted goal at 16:55 of the third period gave the Falcons a 3-1
lead.

It also took the steam out of a relentless Army attack.

"That made a tremendous difference at that point," said AF coach Chuck
Delich. "Army had worked so hard trying to come back. It just broke
their momentum."

While Barlow's punch proved decisive, it wasn't the only one thrown
during the game.

A brawl broke out after a sleepy second period. The melee lasted five
minutes.

The most notable casualty was Army's Mike Landers. Landers ended up
sprawled face down on the ice after a Falcon player blindsided him
with a stick.

At least 6 other players ended up on the ice as fight after fight
broke out. Finally, after coaches and officials intervened, cooler
heads won. However, both benches started the 3rd period with
dicidedly thinner rosters.

Officials levied 11 penalties, 6 to AF and Five to Army. Three
players from each team received game-misconduct penalties.

"It was one of those unfortunate situations that got out of hand
before anybody could do anything about it," Delich said. "Our players
started hitting somebody late at the end of the period. Before you
knew it, a fight had broken ou. Ther's no excuse for it."

Up to that point, the contest was close. Air Force jumped out to a
2-0 lead on the strength of power play goals by Decker and Bilek at
1:58 and 7:10 of the first period, respectively.

Army retaliated with a goal by Randazzo at 11:15 of the first period.

Because of the AF played a man short for six of the 3rd period's first
eight minutes

The Falcons managed to hold off Army's furious efforts to tie the
game.

And Barlow's goal put an exclamation point on the effort.

Decker applied the finisher with a goal into an empty net at the 18:54
mark.

"We've played so many close games this season. Maybe we've learned
how to win one," Delich said.
