HOCKEY FALLS TO SALEM STATE, 6-1
NEW BEDFORD, MA –Visiting Salem State scored three shorthanded goals and two power play goals and defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team, 6-1, in a Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Thursday evening.

The Vikings scored three times in the first period to take a 3-0 lead. Junior forward Nick Lampson (Groton, MA/Jersey Hitmen-EJHL), who scored four goals in the game, was responsible for the first two, scoring unassisted on a breakaway with the Vikings shorthanded at 1:53 of the first period, and firing home a pass from sophomore forward Eric DeFelice (Chalfont, PA/Manhattanville) with SSU on the power play at 7:25.
DeFelice made it 3-0 at 12:24, flipping home the rebound of a shot by senior forward Giancarlo Capodanno (Mountainside, NJ/UMD) at the 12:24 mark.
DeFelice scored the only goal of the second period, breaking away for a shorthanded goal at 8:23. Lamson was denied his third goal when UMD sophomore goaltender Ben Vandervies (Hanna, AB/Kelowna Rockets-KJHL) stopped his attempt on a penalty shot at 14:26 of the second period after UMD was whistled for having a player other than the goaltender covering the puck in the crease. Vandervies replaced UMD starting goaltender Ryan Williams (So. Milton, ON/Huntsville Otters-OPJHL) after DeFelice’s second goal.
Freshman forward Cody Gut (Chichester, NH/Boston Jr. Bulldogs-AtJHL) put UMass Dartmouth on the scoreboard when he flipped his own rebound past SSU sophomore goaltender Ryan Sutliffe (Grand Forks, ND/Helena Bighorns-NORPAC) at 3:41 of the final period. Junior defenseman Zach Hepler (Sarver, PA/Dixie Beehives-OPJHL) assisted. Lamson single-handedly finished the coring, getting a power play goal at 14:46 of the third period, and breaking away for a shorthanded goal at 16:41.
“We turned the puck over on the power play, we shot the puck into their pads when we had a chance, and we gave up three shorthanded goals and two power play goals,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “It just wasn’t out night. We expected a better effort than we got. We have to put this behind us and get ready for Westfield State, which has been playing well lately, on Saturday, which will be Senior Day and Alumni Day.”
The Vikings out shot the Corsairs, 35-27. Sutliffe made 26 saves for SSU, while Williams and Vandervies combined to stop 29 shots for UMD.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 13-7-1 and 8-5-1 in the MASCAC with the defeat, while Salem State improved to 12-6-3 and 9-2-3 in MASCAC play with the victory. UMD will return to action when they host Westfield Saturday. Salem State will host Plymouth State Saturday.
