HOCKEY FALLS TO FITCHBURG STATE, 4-2
NEW BEDFORD, MA –The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team lost to visiting Fitchburg State, 4-2, in a Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Saturday.
Junior forward Cory Callen (Annandale, NJ/Oswego State) scored the game-winning goal assisted by junior forward Justin Quinn (Braintree, MA/Braintree HS) at 3:30 of the middle period giving the Falcons a 3-1 advantage.
Junior defenseman Matt Correia (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS) put the Corsairs on the board first at 8:57 of the opening period, redirecting a shot off the stick of senior forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr Bulldogs) past Falcons sophomore goalie Randy Wolcott (East Haven, CT/Wisconsin-Stevens Point). Junior forward Nick Marquis (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr Warriors) also assisted on the goal. Fitchburg State answered immediately scoring 11 seconds later to tie the game at 1. Falcons senior forward Thomas McAleer (East Islip, NY/New York Bobcats) put it past Corsair junior goalie Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/Huntsville Otters-OPJHL) while Falcons junior forward Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, MA/New England Jr Huskies) assisted. Fitchburg tacked on another goal just 27 seconds later. Freshman forward Sean Loebs (Cresskill, NJ/Connecticut Jr Wolfpack) laced a one-timer from the top of the circle past Williams at 9:35, assisted by freshman forward Carlo DiPiazza (Ridgewood, NJ/Connecticut Jr Wolfpack) making it 2-1.
Both teams traded power play goals in the final period. The Corsairs cut the lead to 3-2 at 3:18 when Marquis scored, assisted by junior defenseman Zach Hepler (Sarver, PA/Dixie Beehives-OPJHL) and freshman defenseman Steve Ginand (Milford, MA/Northern Cyclones-AtJHL). Fitchburg capped the scoring with Callen’s second goal of the game assisted by Quinn and Caveny.
“Fitchburg carried the play in the first period and scored a couple of easy,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “It set us back and we couldn’t get the puck to settle down for us. They played very well, like defending champs. We had a long, tough week and they were just a step quicker. We’ll get back to work on Monday and go from there.”
The Corsairs outshot the Falcons, 35-34. Williams made 30 saves, while Fitchburg State’s Wolcott stopped 33 shots.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 10-5-1 and 6-3-1 in the MASCAC with the loss, while Fitchburg State improved to 6-8-2 and 5-4-1 with the defeat. UMD will return to action when they host Plymouth State next Thursday evening. Fitchburg State will host Westfield State next Thursday.
