With the conference post-season tournaments over and the NCAA tournament
almost upon us, it's time to announce the winners of the Pick the
Post-Season Tournaments contests. For Contest #2, in which all rounds are
scored the same, the overall winner is...
William Sangrey
whose total of 66 points was six better than runners-up Charlie Shub and
Troy D. Mills.
As for the individual conference winners...
The ECAC race ended in a three-way tie among Troy D. Mills, Craig Roberts,
and William Sangrey, with 14 points each. All remained tied after the
first tiebreaker (championship-game score), but Troy took the crown with
the second tiebreaker, as his predicted total goals scored in the
tournament was only one shy of the actual result.
Hockey East also saw a three-way tie among Charlie Shub, John Edwards, and
myself, with 14 points each. Charlie's predicted championship-game score
was good enough to take the first tiebreaker and the title.
The CCHA's top spot went to William Sangrey with 18 points.
Wayne Smith and Troy D. Mills tied for the lead in the WCHA with 14 points
each. The first tiebreaker resolved nothing, but Wayne's predicted total
goals scored in the tournament was good enough to win the second tiebreaker.
Bill Groskreutz's 14 points took the crown in Atlantic Hockey.
Complete scoring results are below. Congratulations to all the winners,
and thanks again to all those who participated.
Tiebreaker notes: The first tiebreaker was the difference between your
predicted championship-game score and the actual score. Thus, if you
picked the score of the ECAC championship game (actually 6-0) to be 5-1,
you would get two points; if you picked 2-0, you would get four points; and
if you picked 4-3, you would get five points. Obviously, the lower the
point score the better.
The second tiebreaker was the difference between your predicted total of
goals scored in the entire tournament and the actual number. Again, the
lower the point total the better.
As far as tiebreakers that were actually needed:
For the ECAC, the championship game score, as mentioned, was 6-0 (yeah,
yeah, yeah) and the total goals scored in the tournament was 131.
For Hockey East, the championship game score was 5-3.
For the WCHA, the championship game score was 3-2, and the total goals
scored in the tournament was 99.
The USCHO prognosticators' numbers are included below, as are the "Higher
Seed" picks showing what would have happened if the higher seed for each
game had been picked to win.
