       HOCKEY BLANKS WORCESTER STATE, 7-0
NEW BEDFORD, MA- Junior forward Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) scored three goals and senior goaltender Collin Tracy Medford, MA/Medford HS) made 18 saves as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team blanked visiting Worcester State, 7-0, in a Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Thursday evening.
UMass Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead in the first period. Senior forward Todd Bartelson (Pepperell, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) skated into the WSU zone, and centered a pass that was re-directed home by senior forward Billy Manning (Stoughton, MA/Bridgewater Jr. Bandits) at the 5:16 mark.
The Corsairs quadrupled their lead in the second period. Dudley made it 2-0 when he flipped home the rebound of a shot by junior defenseman Mike Grzelcyk (Watertown, MA/Winchendon School) at 4:19. Sophomore forward Nick Marquis (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) made it 3-0 when he deposited the rebound of sophomore forward Dave McDonald’s (Wakefield, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) shot into the net at 15:28. Five seconds later, senior forward Jason Stahl made it 4-0 when he took a pass from senior forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) off the ensuing center ice face-off, broke in alone and fired a backhand shot high into the goal.
Dudley scored twice and McDonald scored once for UMD in the third period. Dudley deflected home a shot by senior defenseman Kyle Haas (Newburgh, NY/Northwood School) at 4:09 of the third period, and completed his hat trick when he re-directed home a pass by Marquis at 19:22. McDonald converted a pass from Stahl at 9:57.
“We played well, and we scored some beautiful goals,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “We defended well, and Collin Tracy made the saves when he was called on. Rob Dudley had a hat trick, and Jason Stahl scored a goal on a very skilled play. All in all, it was a good team effort. We’re playing very well right now, and if we win our last two games, we’ll get a bye into the quarterfinals of the MASCAC playoffs.”
The Corsairs out shot the Lancers, 39-18. Junior Bryan Kalczynski (Tonawanda, NY/Erie CC) and sophomore Mark Evans (Ludlow, MA.AIC) combined to make 31 stops for Worcester State.
UMD improved to 16-6-1 and 11-4-1 in the MASCAC with the victory, while WSU fell to 9-10-3 and 5-9-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Framingham State next Thursday evening. The Lancers will host Fitchburg State Saturday.
