HOCKEY DOWNS SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE, 5-2
HOOKSETT, NH-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team scored three goals in the second period and went on to defeat host Southern New Hampshire, 5-2, in a non-conference game at the Ice Den Thursday evening.
Trailing, 1-0, UMass Dartmouth scored the first three goals of the second period to take the lead for good. Senior forward Todd Bartelson (Pepperell, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) took a pass from senior forward Billy Manning (Stoughton, MA/Bridgewater Jr. Bandits) and scored the first of his two goals at 2:04 of the second period to tie the score at 1-1. Junior forward Andrew Pontes (New Bedford, MA/Winchendon School) converted a pass from junior forward Paul Graham (Quincy, MA/Northern Cyclones) to put the Corsairs ahead, 2-1, at 8:19 of the second period, and Graham scored at 16:29 to give UMD a two-goal lead. SNHU had struck first, taking a 1-0 lead nine seconds before time expired in the first period on a goal by Brandon Bradley.
"We played well," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "We got two goals out of our fourth line, and two goals out of third line, and we had good play throughout the lineup. We’re trying to build on what we did last Saturday with the win against Worcester State. Our remaining games are league games, and there’s a lot of significant hockey left to be played."
The Corsairs out shot SNHU, 48-22. Senior goaltender Collin Tracy (Medford, MA/ Medford HS) made 20 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while Ryan Gleason made 43 stops for Southern New Hampshire. UMass Dartmouth converted one of three power play opportunities, while the Penmen scored on one of their four chances.
UMD improved to 11-5-1 with the victory, while SNHU fell to 4-10-2 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Framingham State Saturday. The Penmen will host Assumption Saturday.
