There may have been some collegiate sports confusion here with St. John's which used to be called the Redman, in reference to their red uniforms. It was changed due to the general and incorrect assumption that it referred to Native Americans. I believe McGill is still named the Redman, again in reference to uniform color as well as it is believed also possibly a reference to the founder's Scottish ancestry.

It sounds like Miami was also interchangeably the the Big Reds, the Reds and Whites, and the Big Red-Skinned Warriors. The Redskins is the name that stuck around until changed to the Redhawks.

Thank you,

Doug Peterson

>Bummer. I hope I don't get flak from people who are defending First Nations or Native Americans rights to own their tribal names in terms of nicknames, but I rather liked the Sioux for bucking the NCAA and sticking by their rights. I never saw anything wrong with the Miami Redmen, either. BTW, for those of you who do not live back East, have you noticed how Eastern announcers tend to pronounce the Red Hawks to make them sound like "Red Hots?" At least they aren't insisting that North Dakota change its State name.
