HOCKEY DEFEATS WORCESTER STATE, 8-4

AUBURN, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team scored off the opening face-off and went on to defeat host Worcester State, 8-4, in a Massachusetts College Athletic Conference game at the Horgan Arena Thursday evening.

The Corsairs took the early lead when junior forwards Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors), Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) and Todd Bartelson (Pepperell, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) broke in on goal off the opening face-off. Bartelson scored to put UMass Dartmouth ahead. Sophomore forward Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) then scored twice to stake the Corsairs to a 3-0 advantage.

Stahl and Hill scored for UMass Dartmouth in the second period, which ended with the Corsairs ahead, 5-3. Senior forward Aaron Blades (Chino, CA/Cushing Academy), Bartelson and freshman forward Phil Bronner (Wilbraham, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons) scored in the third period for UMD.

Mark Rintel, Chris Wallin and Billy O’Neill each had a goal and an assist for Worcester State. Bartelson finished with two goals and two assists for the Corsairs, Dudley scored twice and added an assist, and sophomore forward Shawn Manning (Stoughton, MA/Salisbury School) had three assists.

“This was a win that we needed, and it give us a chance to finish fifth in the league,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “For a team that hasn’t scored a lot of goals in the past few games, it was great to score right off the bat. We scored twice again right after that, and we always kept a good distance.”

UMass Dartmouth out shot Worcester State, 49-23. Senior goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons) and sophomore goaltender Collin Tracy (Medford, MA/ Medford HS) combined to make 19 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while Zach Hansen and Andrew Evans combined for 41 stops for WSC. The Corsairs were scoreless in two power play chances, while the Lancers failed on all three of their power play opportunities.

UMD improved to 8-14-1 and 3-12-1 in the MASCAC with the victory, while Worcester State dropped to 5-14-2 and 3-10-2 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Framingham State next Thursday night.
