HOCKEY FALLS AT FITCHBURG STATE, 3-1

FITCHBURG, MA- Host Fitchburg State scored once in each period and Bobby Leiser made 30 saves to lead the Falcons to a 3-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team in a Massachusetts College Athletic Conference game at the Wallace Civic Center Thursday evening.

The Corsairs scored their only goal of the game at 19:31 of the second period. Junior forward Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) converted a pass from junior forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) and scored on a two on one break to halve FSC’s lead.

Fitchburg State took a 1-0 lead on a power play goal by Erik Trahan at 6:58 of the first period. Andrew Hutton made it 2-0 when he shoveled a rebound past Corsair senior goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons-EJHL) at 18:43 of the second period, just 48 seconds before UMass Dartmouth got on the board.

Justin Quinn made it 3-1 when he scored on an odd man rush at 9:05 of the third period.

“Right now, Fitchburg is clicking on all cylinders, and we ran into a hot goaltender tonight,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “They’ve won nine games in a row. We have to regroup and get ready for Saturday, and we’re going from facing one team that is tied for first in the conference to the other.”

Fitchburg State out shot UMass Dartmouth, 36-31. Dryjowicz-Burek made 33 saves for UMass Dartmouth.

The Corsairs were scoreless in their only opportunity on the power play, while FSC converted one of two chances.

UMD dropped to 7-11-1 and 2-9-1 in the MASCAC with the defeat, while Fitchburg State improved to 15-3-1 and 10-2-0 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Salem State Saturday.
