Projections of the number of tournament teams from each conference at this
point is a ceramic Dalmatian argument (those who know what I am referring to, we
are getting old). One thing that drives me crazy, however at this point is
the "fear/gloating" some have that the WCHA could get 7 or 8 teams in the
field. These people forget that 5 WCHA teams are going to end their season by
losing 2 games the weekend prior to the final 5. And, at the final five another
team (4th place) will also lose two games. These losses will change the PWR a
great deal, especially since some HE, ECAC teams will be winning 3 of their
last 4 without getting the automatic bid. The PWR will be very different on
selection day than it is today.
Granted who wins and loses plays a big part, but certainly those teams in the
12-14 PWR band do not want to miss their conference tournament final weekend
(and it is likely that the WCHA 4/7, 5/6 series will match teams in that area).
Just a few thoughts,
William
