HOCKEY TEAM DEFEATS WENTWORTH, 5-3

NEW BEDFORD, MA- Senior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) scored four consecutive power play goals to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team past visiting Wentworth,5-3, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Wednesday night.

Grant became the second Corsair to record a natural hat trick, scoring three consecutive power play goals in the second period to stake UMass Dartmouth to a 4-2 lead after two periods before adding his fourth goal early in the third period.

Grant flipped home the rebound of a shot by senior forward Paul Garabedian (Belmont, MA/Belmont HS) to tie the score at 2-2 at 9:05 of the second period, then re-directed home a pass by freshman forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) a minute and five seconds later to put the Corsairs on top, 3-2. Grant scored his third goal of the second period on the rebound of a shot by sophomore forward Matt Serino (Saugus, MA/Avon Old Farms) at 15:58. Hill, who scored a natural hat trick against Southern New Hampshire January 26th, assisted on all three of Grant’s second period goals. Grant’s fourth goal of the game, at 1:44 of the third period, was assisted by sophomore forward Paul Jerusik (Springfield, MA/Lawrence Academy) and freshman defenseman Mickey Dudley (Douglas, MA/Boston Jr. Bruins). Senior forward Jeff Oddleifson (North Vancouver, BC/Prince George) scored at 8:04 of the third period to complete the scoring.

Wentworth scored the first two goals of the game, striking twice within 39 seconds before the Corsairs scored less than two minutes later, leaving them trailing at the end of the first period, 2-1.

Sophomore defenseman Adam Nicholas (Springvale, ME/Elmira College) put the Leopards on top when he knocked in the rebound of a shot by junior forward Derek Rupert (Louisville, NY/South Grenville) at the 7:21 mark. Junior forward Russ Hanson (Braintree, MA/Bridgewater) made it 2-0 when he fired a wrist shot past Corsair junior goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) at 8:00.

Senior forward Paul Garabedian (Belmont, MA/Belmont HS) put UMass Dartmouth on the scoreboard when he sent a wrist shot past Wentworth sophomore goalie Justin Marriott (St. Clair Shores, MI/Valley) at 9:41 of the first period.

“Our power play was a big factor in the game,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “We’ve now played 13 conference games and given up 20 goals, which is a good number. Big players step up in big games, and that’s exactly what Jeff Grant did tonigt. He also did a great job killing penalties.”

The Corsairs converted four of their 12 power play opportunities while stopping the Leopards on all of their seven chances. UMass Dartmouth out shot Wentworth, 41-24. Green made 21 for the Corsairs, while Marriott made 35 stops for the Leopards.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 12-8-1 and 10-3-0 in the ECAC Northeast with the victory, while Wentworth dropped to 8-12-1 and 7-4-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Framingham State in an ECAC Northeast Conference game Saturday, while Wentworth will host Southern New Hampshire Saturday.
