Ric Shafer of Notre Dame has an outstanding sense of humor.
His remark about the football team's laundry budget being higher than
his hockey budget is a classic. He also scored a magnificent gotcha
on me a year ago when I had been unkind to official Ned Bunyan on this
net. Anyhow, I have 2 more. The first is from our local paper, and
the second (probably apocryphal) was told about a different sport, but I'm
certain ric won't take offense at my using hockey instead of that other
sport and him instead of the other Notre Dame coach.

Anyhow, apparently late in a game, Ferris state's coach sent a guy out
who shadowed the referee for his entire shift. This apparently got to
the official who asked the young man why he was shadowing him. The
skater replied that his coach told him to get out there and stay close
to the most dangerous person on the ice.

A youngster is interviewing at Notre Dame for a slot on the hockey
team. Finally after a long conversation, the coach asks the boy if he
is catholic. The boy responds that he isn't. Coach then goes into a
long explaination of how he'd love to have this kid as a walk on, but
unfortunately with Notre Dame being a catholic school, the
scholarships must go to the catholic applicants. The youngster is so
upset that he slips out with, "well i'll be a son of a bitch!" and
the coach immediately responds, "if you can prove that, just go down
to <city X> and I guarantee coach <whomever> can give you a
scholarship!"

It would be absolutely inappropriate for me to suggest a city and a
coach, although I do have several candidates.
