UMASS DARTMOUTH DEFEATS WESTERN NEW ENGLAND, 8-1

NEW BEDFORD, MA–The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team scored three goals in the first period and went on to defeat visiting Western New England, 7-2, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast hockey game at the Stephen Hetland Memorial Arena Saturday.

The Corsairs scored twice late in the first period to take a 3-0 lead after the first 20 minutes.

Sophomore forward Chris Shore (West Haven, CT/Winchendon Academy) made it 2-0 at the 16:31 mark of the first period, converting passes from his line mates, freshman forward Matt Serino (Saugus, MA/Avon Old Farms) and sophomore forward Nick Paquin (Warwick, RI/Winchendon Academy). Just over a minute later, senior forward Kyle McCullough (Danvers, MA/Boston Jr. Blackhawks) made it 3-0, assisted by junior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) and freshman defenseman Graeme Bourne (Redlands, CA/Campbell River Storm). Grant had made it 1-0 with a goal at 7:51 of the first period.

Senior forward Peter Lindner (Parlin, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) made it 4-0 with the first of his two goals 1:16 into the second period. Joe Balog put the Bears on the board when he scored with WNEC enjoying a two-man advantage at 3:07. Freshman forward Billy Carroll (Duxbury, MA/Bridgton Academy) scored at 7:54 of the second period to make it 5-1 after two periods. Senior forward Jim Foley (Brockton, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) scored for the Corsairs at 11:12 of the third period, and Lindner and Shore each added their second goals of the night later in the third to close out the scoring.

“We moved the puck very well and scored some nice goals,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “We continued to get production out of all four of our lines, which is encouraging. We have to keep the momentum going.”

The Corsairs out shot WNEC, 56-21. Sophomore goaltender Jeff Green (Medford, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) played the first 53:52, made 17 saves and allowed the Bears’ only goal. Junior Bruce Maggio (Quincy, MA/North Quincy HS) played the final 6:08 and made three saves. Kyle Sagnella started for Western New England and allowed seven goals while making 46 saves in 52:24. Glenn McCaffrey played the final 7:36, made two saves and allowed the final goal.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 13-1-1 and 6-0-0 in conference play with the victory, while WNEC fell to 6-7-0 and 1-5-0 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit UMass Boston in a non-conference match up Tuesday evening, while the Bears will host Worcester State next Thursday night.
