UMASS DARTMOUTH DEFEATS SALVE REGINA, 7-2

NEW BEDFORD, MA–The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team scored three goals in the first period and went on to defeat visiting Salve Regina, 7-2, in a non-conference hockey game at the Stephen Hetland Memorial Arena Thursday evening.

The Corsairs, who out shot the Seahawks, 24-7 in the opening period, grabbed a 2-0 lead when the game was barely five minutes old.

Freshman forward Billy Carroll (Duxbury, MA/Bridgton Academy) opened the scoring, taking a pass from senior defenseman Paul Carr (Springfield, MA/Springfield Cathedral HS) and sliding a backhand shot past SRU goalie Ryan Comerford 2:37 into the first period. Carr also assisted on junior Tyler Vrolyk’s (Boylston, MA/New England Junior Falcons) goal that made it 2-0 at 5:13. Sophomore forward Nick Paquin (Warwick, RI/Winchendon Academy) made it 3-0 at 14:16 of the first period. Line mate Chris Shore (So. F West Haven, CT/Winchendon Academy) drew an assist on the play.

UMass Dartmouth doubled their lead in the second period. Senior forward Jim Foley (Brockton, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) tapped in the rebound of a shot by senior forward Kyle McCullough (Danvers, MA/Boston Jr. Blackhawks) for a shorthanded goal at 5:09, freshman forward Matt Serino (Saugus, MA/Avon Old Farms) made it 5-0 when he broke in on Comerford, deked and fired a backhand high into the net at 7:52, and McCullough scored a power play goal at 11:34, converting Carr’s pass and scoring from the circle to Comerford’s right.

Eric Bouchard and Jake Pickard scored third period goals for Salve Regina, while junior forward Paul Garabedian (Belmont, MA/Belmont HS) tipped a shot by freshman defenseman Graeme Bourne (Redlands, CA/Campbell River Storm) at 17:22 of the third period for the final UMD goal.

“We played a very fast-paced, high tempo game,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “We came out flying. We got a goal from our fourth line, we got a goal from our third line, we got a shorthanded goal and we got a power play goal, and (sophomore goaltender) Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Junior Warriors) made a few key saves when we needed them. We’ll look to build momentum from this game.”

The Corsairs out shot SRU, 40-15 in the first two periods and 45-26 overall. Green played the first 43:37, made 18 saves and did not allow a goal, while junior Bruce Maggio (Quincy, MA/North Quincy HS) played the final 16:23 and yielded two scores. Comerford made 38 saves for the Seahawks.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 12-1-1 with the victory, while Salve Regina fell to 4-9-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Western New England in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast match up Saturday, while the Seahawks will resume play when they host Franklin Pierce Sunday afternoon.
