UMASS DARTMOUTH AND WESLEYAN TIE, 1-1

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA– The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team and Wesleyan played to a 1-1 tie in their non-conference match up at the Stephen Hetland Memorial Arena Saturday.

Both goals were scored within a span of 1:14 late in the second period. Ryan Hendrickson opened the scoring for the Cardinals, batting a rebound past UMass Dartmouth sophomore goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) on a power play at 17:30 of the second period. David Layne and Will Bennett assisted.

Senior defenseman Paul Carr (Springfield, MA/Springfield Cathedral HS) returned the favor, scoring a power play goal for the Corsairs at the 18:44 mark. Junior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) won a face-off in the Wesleyan zone, and Carr fired a slap shot over the shoulder of goaltender Mike Palladino to tie the score at 1-1.

Both teams had their chances in the third period, but Green and Palladino came up with big saves to keep the game tied.

“They pushed us and we pushed them, and we wound up with a 1-1 game,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “They are a good team from a good league, and they transition well. Jeff Green was superlative in goal for us.”

The Cardinals out shot UMD, 34-27. Green made 33 saves, while Palladino made 26.

UMass Dartmouth is now 10-0-1 with the tie, which snapped a 26-game regular season winning streak for the Corsairs. Wesleyan is now 3-3-2. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Connecticut College Tuesday night in the final game of the fall semester, while Wesleyan will take the rest of the semester off and play again January 5th at Southern Maine.
