UMASS DARTMOUTH DEFEATS TUFTS, 7-2

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA– The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team exploded for five goals in the third period to break open a close game and defeat Tufts, 7-2, in their non-conference match up at the Stephen Hetland Memorial Arena Tuesday evening.

Junior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) scored his second goal of the game six seconds into the third period to ignite the rally. Grant won the face-off at center ice, took a return pass from senior forward Jim Foley (Brockton, MA/Catholic Memorial HS), and fired a wrist shot past Tufts goaltender Issa Azat. Senior forward Ray Kirby (Fairhaven, MA/York Stars/Salem State) increased the Corsairs’ lead with a goal at the 3:57 mark, and senior forward Kyle McCullough (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) scored his second goal of the game to make it 5-1 less than two minutes later.

Sophomore forwards Chris Shore (West Haven, CT/Winchendon Academy) and Nick Paquin (Warwick, RI/Winchendon Academy) scored the final two goals of the game for UMass Dartmouth. Greg O’Connell scored in the first period to give the Jumbos a 1-0 lead, and Ross Gimbel scored in the third period for Tufts. Grant and McCullough scored power play goals in the second period to give the Corsairs a 2-1 advantage after two periods of play.

“We played a good first period, and we didn’t have anything to show for it,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “We came back in the third period. Jeff Grant scored just six seconds into the period, and we took care of business and got the job done.”

The Corsairs out shot Tufts, 44-20. Azat made 37 saves, while UMass Dartmouth sophomore goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) made 18.

UMD improved to 10-0-0 with the victory, while Tufts fell to 2-5-0 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Wesleyan at the Hetland Memorial Arena Saturday, while the Jumbos will visit Connecticut College Saturday.
