UMASS DARTMOUTH FITCHBURG STATE

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA– For the second game in a row, the second period made the difference for the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team.

The Corsairs scored four second-period goals to break a 1-1 tie and defeated Fitchburg State, 7-3, in their non-conference game at the Hetland Memorial Arena Wednesday evening.

Senior forward Peter Lindner (Parlin, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) broke the tie with the first of UMD’s two power play goals, jamming a rebound past FSC goaltender Devan McConnell at the 2:11 mark. Junior forward Tyler Vrolyk (Boylston, MA/New England Junior Falcons), who won the face-off, drew the only assist. Senior forward Jim Foley (Brockton, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) made it 3-1 with another power play goal when his shot deflected in off a FSC player at 8:40. Junior defenseman Tyler Crocker (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) blasted home a slap shot from the point at 10:47, and sophomore forward Chris Shore (West Haven, CT/Winchendon Academy) scored the first of his two goals on a wrist shot from the top of the face-off circle at 18:30.

Freshman defenseman Graeme Bourne (Redlands, CA/Campbell River Storm and Shore scored in the third period against Chris Guyer, who relieved McConnell after 40 minutes. Junior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin prep) gave UMD a 1-0 lead with a shot from the slot at 9:09 of the first period. Michael Goulet tied it for Fitchburg 28 seconds later. Chad Larkowski and Jason Ledo scored third-period goals for the Falcons.

“You could either look at this as a trap game, or as a game we could use to play well and build momentum for the Curry game on Saturday,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “I thought that the two power play goals we got in the second period were the catalyst to the victory. We have to take it one game at a time, but we’re now 8-0 going into the Curry game, and I think we were 3-3 at this time last year.”

UMD out shot the Falcons, 29-14 during the final two periods after being out shot during the first period, 10-9. The Corsairs finished with a 38-24 edge in shots. Green made 21 saves, while McConnell and Guyer combined for 31.

UMD improved to 8-0-0 with the victory, while Fitchburg State fell to 4-2-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host conference favorite Curry at the Hetland Memorial Arena Saturday.
