COMMENTS
--------
Boston College came out hard and fast in a Saturday win over visiting
Bowling Green, 5-1. This provided a little welcome relief to BC fans after
the Eagles dropped a 7-1 game to Notre Dame on Friday night. The number
two line of Joe Rooney, Benn Ferriero, and Brock Bradford were the stars of
the night, with Rooney and Ferriero picking up 4 points apiece and Bradford
contributing 2 assists. Derek Whitmore scored his 5th of the season to
provide the only BGSU offense.

BC was flying from the first drop of the puck in this one, determined to
make up for a subpar performance the night before. They took an early
penalty, but ended up getting the best chance on the power play when Nathan
Gerbe had a shorthanded break, forcing Jimmy Spratt to make a save.
BC continued the pressure from that point and peppered the goal with shots.
Spratt foiled another break by Brock Bradford, and BGSU got a shorthanded
shot of their own, crashing the net but not getting it past Cory Schneider.
The Eagles finally scored on a power play, when Brian Boyle camped in front
of the net and potted a quick rebound of a shot from the left circle. More
BC shots followed, and Ferriero got his first of two goals with a nice high
shot on a 2-on-1 break with Joe Rooney. After heavy domination by BC, the
Falcons finally got some action late in the period, buzzing on the fore-
check and forcing several saves. Just when it seemed the period would end
with a 2-0 score, Whitmore spun around in the left circle and popped a
quick shot that somehow slid in with just 6 seconds left in the period.

Bowling Green did a better job in the second period but the only score came
from Joe Rooney of the Eagles, who collected a nice pass from behind the
net and pushed a shot short side to give BC the 3-1 lead. The Falcons put
on concerted pressure for several minutes after that, Jon Erickson ringing
one off the crossbar from the slot, and Schneider making a big glove save
when Todd McIlrath tried to finish off a 2-on-1 break. BGSU was having
some success holding the puck in the zone, not allowing BC to relieve the
pressure. A penalty gave BC a power play, though, and that broke the
stretch of BGSU control. Both teams traded power plays for the remainder
of the period, and neither team came that close to scoring.

The third period was a bit more wide open, with Rooney missing on a clear
break chance to open the frame. Things were a bit sloppy for a few
minutes, and BC scored their fourth goal to stop any thoughts of a Bowling
Green comeback. Rooney collected a pass and sped around the net to the
left side, feeding a low pass back through a pile of bodies in the slot,
where it came to Gerbe all alone in the right circle. He made no mistake
with a quick high shot to the short side. A furious flurry in front of
the net on a subsequent BGSU power play somehow didn't get the puck past
Schneider, and he made several more good saves to finish the penalty kill.
Ferriero potted his second goal for the final scoring, finishing another
nice pass from Joe Rooney as he skated deep in the zone.

The BC crowd was pleased with the outcome, seeing a worthy effort from the
team after being displeased by the weak game the night before. (Knowing
that Notre Dame had another big win over Providence Saturday made it clear
that ND played really well this weekend, also putting Friday's effort in
a bit more perspective.) Ferriero was the clear star of the game with his
first 2 goals of the season and assisting on 2 others, and Rooney was
equally strong with great passing and a goal of his own. Moving Nathan
Gerbe to the top line seemed to give his game another notch of energy.
If the 3rd and 4th lines can produce a little bit and provide energy and
defensive pressure, that may be enough for the offense. The defense, while
led by an improved Cory Schneider in this game, still is giving up a lot of
shots and occasionally getting out of position for extended stretches. The
penalty kills were better in this game, and that may continue to be a
strength for the rest of the season.

Bowling Green should come away from the weekend reasonably pleased with
their effort, with a win Friday over Providence and a competitive game
at BC. The BC speed gave them problems, and their defense got lost at
times, but the offense produced and had some very good chances to put more
goals in the net. With a lesser goalie or a little more luck, this game
would have been a lot closer. With only one senior in the starting lineup,
I would guess that the Falcons will have a fair season (probably not a
real good one) but have a lot of promise for next year. If the goaltending
can come around and the defense shore up a bit more, they should be
competitive in most games. They probably need a bit more strength up
front and could use more speed as well (but who couldn't?)

Bowling Green now starts their CCHA schedule, starting with a 2-game set
at state rival Miami next week. The Eagles have one more week of non-
conference games, traveling to Wisconsin for 2 high-profile games with
their foe from last year's championship game. Friday's game is the
feature contest on CSTV.
