PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The 11th-ranked Providence College Friars defeated the
Boston University Terriers, 6-3, in the opening game of the best-of-three
HOCKEY EAST Quarterfinal Series on Friday, March 9 at PC's Schneider Arena.
Senior J.J. Picinic and sophomore Devin Rask each netted two goals to lead
the Friars to their 20th win of the season.
        The Friars opened a 3-0 first period lead with goals from Jon DiSalvatore,
Rask and Stephen Wood.  At the 7:40 mark, DiSalvatore skated out of the
corner and fired a slap shot past BU netminder Jason Tapp.  Rask added his
team leading 21st goal of the season at the 9:03 mark of the first period.
Wood poked in a rebound 32 seconds after Rask's goal to give PC a 3-0 lead
at 9:35 and send Terrier starting goaltender Jason Tapp to the bench to be
replaced by Sean Fields.  BU's Mike Pandolfo scored the first of his two
goals in the game at the 10:49 mark of the first period to put the Terriers
on the scoreboard.
        After a scoreless second period, both teams combined for five goals in the
third period.  Picinic scored the first two goals of the period at 7:05 and
10:52 to give the Friars a 5-1 lead.  Pandolfo wristed in a rebound past
Friar netminder Nolan Schaefer at 13:31 of the third for his second tally of
the night.  Rask added his second goal and PC's final of the game at 15:48
before BU's Dan Cavanaugh slid a low shot under Schaefer at 16:19 of the
third to complete the scoring.
        Schaefer finished with 17 saves and earned his 13th victory of the season.
Fields and Tapp combined to make 19 stops for the Terriers.
        With the win, the Friars improved to 20-10-5, while Boston University fell
to 13-19-3 .
        Providence College will return to action on Saturday,  March 10 against
Boston University in the second game of the HOCKEY EAST best-of-three
Quarterfinal Series at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
