Giles Threadgold was unabashed in his hatred for BU. A member of BC's 1949
NCAA championship team, Threadgold was open and honest in his opinion of the
Terriers, and had zero hesitation about voicing it with the press. Whenever
he officiated a BU game, you always knew that the other team had an extra
skater.

Frank Kelly was worse than clueless. Remember these were the days when
there were only two officials on the ice. Kelly was silent for the first 45
minutes of an average game. Then the whistle came out, and for the final 5
minutes of the game it would not stop. I never saw a ref who would make
himself a major influence in any given game as he would.

To my knowledge, Jack Garrity never officiated a BU game, much like
Threadgold never officiated a BC game. Garrity, who played only two years
for BU and was an All-America both seasons, was typical of college players
at the start of the 1950's. He is still one of the most prolific scorers in
the team's history. A WWII veteran, he had to leave school after his junior
year to support his family. Remember that back then freshmen were
ineligible. Garrity today is seen regularly at Walter Brown Arena, and you
can talk to him during BU's Holiday Skate. My father-in-law enjoyed meeting
him two years ago, only because there was someone on the ice older than he
was.
