This Week: The Michigan Tech men's ice hockey team will open the
Western Collegiate Hockey Association portion of its schedule with a
two-game series against the Wisconsin Badgers. Opening faceoff is
slated for 7:35 p.m. (EDT) Friday (Oct. 13) and 7:05 p.m. Saturday
(Oct. 14). Both games will be staged at the legendary MacInnes
Student Ice Arena (4,200) on the MTU campus.

The Records: Michigan Tech is 0-0-1 overall and 0-0-0 in the WCHA.
The Huskies are coming off a 3-3 home tie vs. Northern Michigan last
Friday (Oct. 6). Wisconsin is 2-0-0 overall after upending
UMass-Amherst twice (9-6, 3-0) at home last weekend (Oct. 6-7). The
Badgers are 0-0-0 in the WCHA.

Coach Tim Watters: Tim Watters, who was a driving force in making the
Peter J. Grant Hockey Educational Center a reality, is in his fifth
season as the head coach of the Huskies. He owns a 38-106-7 career
record. Watters played three years of college hockey for MTU
(1977-79, 80-81) and earned All-America honors his final campaign in
helping the Huskies to a third-place NCAA finish. He went on to play
13 years in the National Hockey League, including seven seasons with
the Winnipeg Jets and six with the Los Angeles Kings and then spent
one season as an assistant coach with the Boston Bruins.

Coach Tim Watters On This Week: "I thought we had a solid effort,
particularly the second half of the game, last Friday against
Northern Michigan. Certainly, Wisconsin will be a very strong test
for us, but one we welcome. They have a very good goaltender in
Graham Melanson and of course everyone is aware of Dany Heatley. It
should be a great weekend of hockey."

The Series: Michigan Tech and Wisconsin meet for the 120th and 121st
time this weekend. In a series that began back in 1927-28, UW has a
70-42-7 advantage over the Huskies.

Huskies Hints: Michigan Tech broke a seven-game losing streak against
Northern Michigan last Friday (Oct. 6) with a 3-3 tie vs. the
Wildcats in Houghton . . . Senior defenseman Mat Snesrud (Cloquet,
Minn.) had a goal and an assist vs. Northern Michigan last Friday
(Oct. 6). Snesrud had one multiple-point game last year and now has
three total in his career . . . Senior left wing Matt Ulwelling
(Warroad, Minn.) and senior center Jarrett Weinberger (Detroit,
Mich.) each played in their 100th career game last Friday (Oct. 6)
vs. Northern Michigan . . . Michigan Tech has played one overtime
game already this season. Tech played in just one overtime game all
of last year . . . Senior left wing Matt Ulwelling (Warroad, Minn.)
won 13 of 17 faceoff attempts vs. Northern Michigan last Friday (Oct.
6) . . . Michigan Tech had a shorthanded goal, even-strength goal,
and power play goal in its game last Friday (Oct. 6) vs. Northern
Michigan . . . Freshman right wing Brett Engelhardt (Sheboygan, WIs.)
picked up his first career point vs. Northern Michigan with an assist
on the Huskies' shorthanded goal by senior Tab Lardner (Edmonton,
Alta.). Engelhardt played for the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL last
year . . . Bob Olson is in his 30th year as the radio voice of the
Hockey Huskies. Olson's wife Edda passed away last Saturday (Oct. 7).
Edda Olson, for more than two decades, produced the WMPL Radio
College Hockey Poll . . . Sophomore forward O.J. Bottoms (Hibbing,
Minn.) will turn 20 this Sunday (Oct. 15) . . . Michigan Tech's
27-player roster includes 18 Americans and nine Canadians . . . Of
Tech's 18 rostered American players, seven are from Michigan, seven
are from Minnesota, one from Missouri, one from Ohio, one from Rhode
Island, and one from Wisconsin . . . Michigan Tech has co-captains
this season in senior forward Matt Ulwelling (Warroad, Minn.) and
senior defenseman Adrian Fure (Marquette, Mich.) . . . The Huskies
debuted their new white jerseys last Friday (Oct. 6) vs. NMU. The
jerseys are similar to the Tech black jerseys, with the MTU logotype
as well as the Husky dog.

About Wisconsin: Jeff Sauer (Colorado College, 1965) is in his 19th
season as head coach at Wisconsin. He owns a career mark of
453-272-38 and in 29-plus years as a head coach is 619-498-49. The
Badgers are led offensively by sophomore center Dany Heatley. In two
games this season, Heatley has 1-3--4. Other top Badger point getters
include junior center Kent Davyduke (1-2--3), senior defenseman Jeff
Dessner (1-2--3), and sophomore wing Brad Winchester (1-2--3). In
goal, senior Graham Melanson leads the way. He is 2-0-0 with a 3.12
goals against average and a .900 saves percentage.

Tuesday throughout the season beginning at 6 p.m. on 93.5 FM.  Host
Bob Olson joins coach Watters each week to discuss Huskies hockey

Huskies Lose Good Friend: Edda Olson, wife of legendary MTU hockey
broadcaster Bob Olson, passed away on Oct. 7 at 1:40 p.m. at Portage
Hospital in Hancock, Mich. One of college hockey's great friends,
Edda compiled and distributed the WMPL Radio College Hockey Poll for
more than two decades. She, and her husband Bob,  have always been
tremendous supporters of college hockey. For more than 20 years, WMPL
has served as the clearinghouse for all college hockey scores every
night the game is played.

Coaches Corner/Blueline Luncheon: The next Coaches Corner/Blueline
Club Luncheon of the season is set for Friday (Oct. 13) at 12 noon in
the Lake Superior Room of the Northern Lights Restaurant. MTU hockey
coach Tim Watters and Wisconsin hockey coach Jeff Sauer are the
featured speakers. Cost for the buffet luncheon is $6.75 per person,
which includes tax and tip. Blueline Club members receive a 50-cent
discount.


Up Next: After hosting Wisconsin, the Huskies will play their first
road series -- Oct. 20-21 -- at defending-national-champion North
Dakota.
