Just as I was keying in my other question about Joel Laing,
I received the following post from the RPI SID. In the article,
he states that Laing WAS runner-up for the Hobey Baker award. The entire article is included below.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: APRIL 18, 2000

JOEL LAING NAMED GTE ACADEMIC
ALL-AMERICA OF THE YEAR

Rensselaer senior goaltender Joel Laing has been named the GTE Academic
All-America of the Year for fall/winter by the Sports Information
Directors of America (CoSIDA). The award is for the men’s at-large
university division category. A management major with a 3.97 cumulative
grade point average, Laing set several school records this season and
was the runner-up for the prestigious Hobey Baker Award as the top
player in U.S. college hockey, as well as a First Team National
All-American.

Pete Gardiner, a classmate and teammate of Laing’s who carries a 3.84
cumulative grade point average in management information systems, has
been chosen to the 1999-00 Winter Men’s At-Large GTE Academic
All-America University Division Third Team. Both Laing and Gardiner
study in RPI’s world-renowned Lally School of Management & Technology.

This season, Laing posted a 17-7-2 record with a 1.82 goals against
average and a .947 save percentage to rank among the leaders in the
nation in each category. His save percentage is believed to be the best
in NCAA Division I history. The Maryfield, Sask., native broke the
school’s records for shutouts in a single season (6) and in a career
(13) and won the Ken Dryden Award as the Goaltender of the Year in the
Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). During the season, the
All-ECAC First Team choice won a weekly league award eight separate
times.

Off the ice, Laing, who in February spent five days in the hospital with
severely swollen glands, is a member of Olympia, RPI’s student-athlete
honor society. He is also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory
Board and he has won the hockey team’s Scholar-Athlete Award each of the
last three years.

Gardiner, a right wing, is also a member of Olympia, as well as Epsilon
Delta Sigma, an honorary management fraternity, and Who’s Who Among
America’s College Students. He was chosen a USA All-American
Scholar-Athlete and last year was a finalist for The Humanitarian,
presented each year to "college hockey’s finest citizen", for his
charitable contributions. A native of Toronto, Ont., Gardiner tallied
11 goals and 13 assists for 24 points in 36 games this season. He
finished third on the team, which finished 22-13-2, in goals and is the
school’s all-time leader in games played (144) in a career.

The male athletes who were eligible for the 1999-2000 GTE Academic
All-America Fall-Winter At-Large Teams were those who participated in
cross country, fencing, gymnastics, ice hockey, rifle, skiing, soccer,
swimming, water polo or wrestling.
