Summary:

Although Union gave a great effort, it was not enough as St. Lawrence
came away with a 5-1 win at Achilles Rink. John Massoud and Greg
Carvel each scored twice for the Saints, who are now in 1st place in
the ECAC.

The first period had to be one of the best that Union has played all
season. They limited St. Lawrence to just 6 shots on Mike Gallant.
The entire team played well - crisp passing, hard checking, and most
importantly, no dumb penalties.

It didn't take long for St. Lawrence to take the lead in the 2nd
period. Massoud came in past Bill McKenna, but seemed to wait too
long to take a shot. But he did shoot, and somehow, the puck found a
way into the net from a bad angle. Under a minute later, Carvel put a
pass from Lee Albert between Gallant's pads for a 2-0 lead. But
unlike the past few games, Union did not fall apart after the quick
goals. On a power play toward the end of the period, Union made one
of their few defensive mistakes, but it cost them. Scott Whitney was
setting up a rush on the power play when Carvel stole the puck from
him at his own blue line. Carvel came in alone and beat Gallant for
the shorthanded goal. On that same power play, the Dutchmen took
advantage of some sloppy SLU defense to score their goal. Chris
Albert poked in a rebound to bring Union back to within 2. Near the
end of the period, a fight broke out in front of the Union bench.
Each team ended up with a double minor and a minor, although it seems
that there should have been an additional penalty on the Saints for a
late man in. Keith can probably explain the situation better.

The Saints dominated the 3rd period, outshooting Union 18-7. But
thanks to Gallant, they only scored twice. One interesting play late
in the period came when a puck just got through Gallant, but stopped
right on the goal line. It seems like it was just laying there
forever before the Union defense came in to clear it.

Overall, Union had to be very happy with the way they played,
especially after last weekend. It was also a very fun game to watch,
with a lot of good passing and nice setups. All the comments from
Coach Delventhal and the players were positive.

Union notes:
- Union's goal kept their 4-year streak of no shutouts going.
- Craig Ferrero was shut out for the 3rd consecutive game. Ferrero
needs just 2 points to take over 5th place on Union's all-time scoring
list.
- Senior Tim Cregan is out for the season after a knee injury during
the Dartmouth game. He was replaced by Kevin Sullivan.

Union falls to 1-15-1 in the ECAC, 2-17-1 overall. SLU is 13-3-1, 1st
place in the ECAC, and 17-6-2 overall. St. Lawrence will play at RPI
tonight, with Clarkson at Union. Both games start at 7:00.
