This is opinion not "fact" but I think that it was at least partially the
competition for players that caused the institutionalization of this fund.
As for stress on education, I'm not on the inside but I suspect this would
vary from team to team, just as some US schools take their responsibility
to their "student atheletes" seriously and some, alas, don't.
