Well, it's finals week here in Minneapolis, the hockey team is 4 wins away
from a national championship, so is the basketball team; what a great
winter!!

I have fallen behind, but I would like to make just a few comments:

>WCHA Rookie of the Year: Brant Nicklin, Minnesota-Duluth
>WCHA All-Rookie Team
>Forwards: Toby Petersen, CC; Dave Spehar, MN; Bud Smith NMU
>Defense: Curtis Doell, UMD; and Ben Clymer, MN
>Goalie: Brant Nicklin, UMD
>All information taken from the Star Tribune 3/15/97

I was quite surprised by this. I really thought Spehar would be Freshman
of the Year. (1. Sorry, I hate the term rookie for college players, and
don't even start on me about fresh_man_, I WON'T say first-year student.
2. No, I am not a 'homer', anyone who knows me knows I am not a big Spehar
fan.) He was the third(?) leading scorer on the co-championship team, and
led that team in game-winning goals. Nicklin had a good year, but I don't
know if I'd call it a great year. Just over .500 winning %, not in the top
5 GAA. But he did play all of the teams WCHA minutes.

VEGAS LINES
I had a friend in Vegas 2-3 weeks ago, and he went to 2 casinos to look at
basketball lines for the national championship, but they wouldn't give him
any until the field was set, but they would give him hockey lines.

1st casino: Minnesota 7-1, UMD 100-1
2nd casino: Minnesota 3-1, UMD 30 -1 (Sorry, those were the only two teams he
checked on, being an alumnus of the UofM
and knowing my connection with UMD.)

MANKATO STATE 1997-98 SCHEDULE (partial, D-I only)
From Tuesday's Star-Tribune:
10/17-10/18 @Minnesota-Duluth
10/24-10/25 @SCSU
10/31-11/01 Denver
12/12-12/13 Colorado College
01/02-01/03 @Minnesota
01/30-01/31 @North Dakota
02/27-02/28 @Michigan Tech
??/??-??/?? ?Ferris State
??/??-??/?? ?Michigan State
??/??-??/?? ?Union

1. I am sure Mankato State released the dates for the last three, but the
Star-Tribune probably just didn't put them in.

2. I thought it was interesting that the two teams that are farthest away
are the ones that are coming to Mankato.

Well, I'm off again, two finals (and eight wins!) to go.

Tony
