                  AVALANCHE OF HOCKEY HYSTERIA BURIES STATE
 
 
   ...  many who once believed icing was the stuff on a cake, now have
   a sweeter passion: the Colorado Avalanche.
 
   ...Avalanche fever has swept up even those who don't know a
   cross-check from a traveler's check.
 
   Even neophyte fans who think a power play is some kind of political
   manouver...
 
   "I thought it was pretty neat," said Adriane Calhoun of Colorado
   Springs. "I don't know beans about hockey, but this is pretty amazing.
   First the local college team does so well, and now the pro team."
 
   The Colorado College Tigers advanced to the NCAA championship game
   earlier this year, losing by one goal to the University of Michigan.
 
   Stores that sell Avalanche apparel have been moving merchandise faster
   than a Joe Sakic slap shot.
