From the AP report in Saturday's Star-Tribune:

In what is believed to be the first time a woman has played
college hockey on a men's team in the United States, goalie
Jenny Hanley made 26 saves as Hamline scored a 5-2 nonconference
victory over Wisconsin-Stout on Friday night in Lindstrom, Minn.

Hanley, an Edina High School goalie last season, made a stick save
on the first shot she faced. Stout's Todd Watkins scored on the
second one a breakaway 1:16 into the game. After that Hanley
	gave up only a second-period power-play goal.

"She proved she can play at a level beyond high school," said
	Hamline coach Tim Cornwell.

Hanley shares the goalie chores with Jim Glockner. Glockner
played all of the Pipers' opener, a 7-6 overtime loss to
	Stout on Monday.

"I think it surprises a lot of people," Hanley said of her playing
goalie. "I think it was daring. To come out and recruit a
girl is a big step. But you have to go by what somebody's
ability is. You can't just go by what somebody generalizes about
	you."

For those of you who are interested, Hanley started last season
as the backup goalie for the Edina Hornets, one of the more successful
high school hockey teams in the state. She worked her way into the starting
role by playoff time and brought the team within one game of the Minnesota
State Tournament, losing 4-2 to a Richfield team with 3 1991 Div I recruits
(Darby Hendrickson & Brandon Steege of Minnesota and Brad Wilner of
Lake Superior State).
Is it right to say, though, that this is the first time a woman has
played for a men's college hockey team in the US? With women's hockey
being more common in the East, I would think that perhaps this has happened
before.
